Amazon Acquires Rivr, the Stair-Climbing Delivery Robot Startup
Amazon has acquired Rivr, a Zurich-based robotics startup that builds autonomous stair-climbing delivery robots, in a move that signals the e-commerce giant's continued push toward last-mile doorstep delivery automation. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
What Rivr Builds
Rivr's robot is a four-legged wheeled machine designed to navigate the kind of terrain that has long been a barrier for delivery automation: stairs. Co-founder and CEO Marko Bjelonic once described it to TechCrunch as a “dog on roller skates.” The description captures what makes the robot distinctive. Most autonomous delivery vehicles operate on flat surfaces and stop at the curb or building entrance. Rivr's robot continues up the steps.
The acquisition gives Amazon a technology that addresses one of the most persistent challenges in robotic delivery. Getting a package to a front door, rather than a lobby or a curb, requires navigating steps, uneven surfaces, and narrow pathways that wheeled robots struggle with. A four-legged system built specifically for this environment closes that gap.
How Amazon Got Here
Amazon's interest in Rivr predates this acquisition by at least two years. The Amazon Industrial Innovation Fund and Bezos Expeditions both participated in a $22.2 million seed round that closed in 2024, according to PitchBook. Rivr had raised a total of $25 million and was last valued at $100 million before the acquisition.
The investment gave Amazon visibility into Rivr's technology and development progress well before any acquisition discussions became public. It is a pattern Amazon has used before, backing startups in categories it is monitoring before acquiring them once the technology matures.
Last year, Rivr ran a pilot program in Austin in partnership with Veho, a package delivery company. At the time, Bjelonic said he hoped to scale the program to 100 robots by 2026. Whether that milestone was reached before the acquisition is unclear.
What Bezos Said About the Deal
Bjelonic shared the acquisition news on LinkedIn, framing it in terms of what Amazon's resources make possible. He said the deal will “accelerate our vision of building General Physical AI through doorstep delivery, bringing robotics and AI closer to real-world deployment at scale.”
The phrase “General Physical AI” points to a broader ambition than delivery logistics. It describes AI systems that operate effectively in the physical world across a range of environments and tasks, rather than being optimized for a single controlled setting. Doorstep delivery, with its variability in terrain, weather, and building types, serves as a real-world testing ground for exactly that kind of system.
What This Means for Amazon's Delivery Strategy
Amazon has been building toward autonomous last-mile delivery for years across multiple tracks. The company operates Prime Air, its drone delivery program, and has deployed wheeled sidewalk robots in select markets. Rivr fills a specific gap in that portfolio: navigating the final few meters from street level to front door in environments where stairs are involved.
For sellers, the longer-term implication is a delivery network that operates with less human intervention at the doorstep level. As Amazon integrates Rivr's technology into its fulfillment and delivery operations, the scope of what qualifies as a deliverable location expands. Buildings and addresses that were previously impractical for autonomous delivery become viable over time.
The acquisition also fits the pattern Amazon established with its one-hour and three-hour delivery launch earlier this week. The company is investing across multiple fronts simultaneously to compress delivery timelines and reduce the human labor required at each stage of the process. Rivr accelerates the physical automation side of that strategy in a way that complements the speed and logistics infrastructure Amazon is building elsewhere.
