Amazon Is Bringing $0 Placement Fees to Air Freight. Check the Math First.

Amazon Global Logistics is extending Seller Managed Placement to air freight in early Q4, letting sellers ship to all five US fulfillment regions with no FBA inbound placement service fee. A second option, Economy Air, is live now at 11-15 day transit from Shanghai and Shenzhen into Los Angeles.

SMP has been ocean-only since July 2025. Amazon's own program documentation restricts it to LCL or FCL shipments using Standard Ocean or Fast Ocean services. Air SMP is a genuine expansion.

It also inherits a cost structure that doesn't obviously work at air freight volumes.

What Air SMP Offers

The pitch is specific. Seven to ten calendar days from origin pickup to FC delivery, with daily flights from Shanghai and Hong Kong. No FBA inbound placement service fee. Live unload at the fulfillment center for faster intake. Five destination regions, each locked to a single FC rather than randomly distributed. Consolidation of multiple shipments heading to the same region. No category surcharges for apparel, electronics, or lithium battery products.

The requirement is at least five identical cartons per product per shipment, matching the existing ocean SMP rule.

The Math Amazon Doesn't Mention

Here's the part worth working through before booking anything.

Amazon's own SMP FAQ states the program is ideal for medium to high-density shipments over 10 CBM and explicitly not recommended below that threshold. The reason: splitting into five shipments means the fixed fee incurs five times, once per shipment. Below 10 CBM, the FAQ says cost savings are “none or” negative.

Air freight shipments are typically far smaller than 10 CBM. That's the entire point of air, moving less volume faster at higher per-unit cost.

So the $0 placement fee headline runs into a structural problem. You avoid the FBA inbound placement service fee, then potentially pay five separate fixed freight fees instead. Whether that nets positive depends on your shipment size and Amazon's air freight fee structure, which hasn't been published in the announcement.

Why Amazon Is Pushing This Now

Placement fees went up hard this year. The January 2026 fee restructure raised inbound placement fees by as much as 179% for some size categories. Sellers have been looking for ways around that cost ever since.

Layer on peak fulfillment fees that started October 15 and a 3.5% fuel surcharge still in effect, and a program promising $0 placement fees during Q4 is well-timed marketing regardless of whether the underlying math works for your volume.

Economy Air Is the Simpler Option

Economy Air has fewer variables. Eleven to fifteen days from cargo receipt to destination FC unload, Shanghai and Shenzhen origins, LAX destination, at rates below standard AGL air.

That's a straightforward tradeoff: a few extra days of transit for lower cost, still weeks faster than ocean. No placement splitting, no five-shipment fixed fee question. If you need air speed for a stockout or a launch and can absorb four extra days, the value is easier to evaluate.

The limitation is geographic. One destination, LAX. If your inventory needs to reach East Coast customers quickly, you're still paying for ground transport from California or choosing a different service.

One Thing to Weigh Before Committing

Using AGL gives Amazon expanded access to your business and product information, including supplier details. Some sellers consider that a real risk given Amazon's private label history, and some have reported extended shipping times and slow problem resolution.

That's not a reason to avoid AGL automatically. It's a factor that belongs in the comparison alongside rate and transit time, particularly if your supplier relationships are a competitive advantage.

What to Do

For Economy Air, request rates now and compare against your current air forwarder on identical lanes and weights. The service is live, and the comparison is simple.

For Air SMP, wait for published rates before assuming the $0 placement fee saves you money. Ask AGL directly what the per-shipment fixed fee is and calculate it five times against the placement fee you'd otherwise pay. If your typical air shipment runs well under 10 CBM, the ocean SMP guidance suggests you should check carefully rather than assume the savings carry over.
