Amazon Launches Multi-Channel Fulfillment in Germany

Recently, Amazon announced the launch of its Multi-Channel Fulfillment (MCF) service in Germany, targeting brands that sell on Amazon and through direct-to-consumer (DTC) channels. Germany, being the largest e-commerce market in the German-speaking region and one of the top four in Europe, presents a significant opportunity for these brands.

Streamlining Inventory Management

Previously, brands managing both Amazon stores and independent e-commerce sites had to maintain separate inventory systems. One was for Amazon orders, and another for other sales channels. According to Amazon, the MCF service allows sellers to store inventory in Amazon's fulfillment centers and use the same stock for orders from different channels, simplifying inventory management.

MCF differs from Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) in its functionality. While FBA handles orders placed on the Amazon platform, MCF processes orders from brand websites, social media stores, or other sales platforms. Sellers using FBA can directly use their existing inventory for MCF orders without re-shipping to the warehouse. Notably, MCF does not require businesses to sell on Amazon's platform.

Service Features and Coverage

MCF offers two “click-to-delivery” (CTD) services: Express, delivering within 1-2 business days, and Standard, within 2-3 business days. The service covers the entire EU, with Amazon's logistics network extending to fulfillment centers in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Poland, and the Czech Republic, among others.

In Germany, MCF orders are shipped in unbranded packaging by default, ensuring no Amazon branding appears, which is crucial for DTC brands concerned about brand image. This option incurs no additional cost, provided the items meet certain criteria.

Order logistics can be managed through Seller Central, where sellers can view order status, estimated shipping dates, and delivery times. Once shipped, the system provides tracking numbers and carrier links and updates delivery progress in real time.

MCF operates on a pay-as-you-go model with no long-term contracts. Fees are calculated based on item size, weight, category, and chosen delivery speed. Compensation and Returns

As of August 23, 2024, the maximum compensation for a single lost item during MCF delivery is €275, calculated using expected sales revenue or comparable product prices when direct data are unavailable. Sellers must file claims within 90 days of the promised delivery date, providing order numbers and proof of customer refunds or replacements.

MCF offers two return handling options: returning items to the seller's warehouse or to an Amazon fulfillment center. Upon return, Amazon staff inspect the items, restocking sellable goods and processing unsellable ones according to seller preferences.

Currently, over 300,000 sales partners globally use MCF for orders from their websites, social media stores, and other channels. MCF is available in 10 countries, including Australia, Canada, France, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Spain, the UK, the US, and Germany. Amazon's European logistics network spans over 20 countries.
