Shopify’s Checkout Deadline Is Today. Here’s What to Check Before Your Ad Numbers Look Wrong.
If you run a Shopify store on the Basic, Shopify, Advanced, or Pause and Build plan, today is the day Shopify automatically upgrades your Thank You and Order Status pages, whether you've prepared for it or not. Additional Scripts, the box where most merchants pasted tracking pixels and custom code for years, stops running entirely. Plus stores already went through this exact transition on August 28, 2025. Today is when everyone else catches up.
The danger here isn't a visible glitch. It's silence. Your store keeps taking orders normally. Your ad platforms just quietly stop hearing about them.
What Actually Breaks Today
If you have Google Ads conversion tracking, a Meta Pixel, GA4 events, TikTok ads tracking, affiliate attribution scripts, or any custom JavaScript pasted into the Additional Scripts box on your Thank You or Order Status page, all of it stops firing today with no warning popup and no gradual sunset. Checkout.liquid customizations, including any brand styling or layout tweaks built into that legacy file, are also gone for good, replaced by Shopify's newer checkout and accounts editor.
Here's the part that catches merchants off guard: Additional Scripts has actually been view-only since August 28, 2025. You could see what was in there, but you haven't been able to edit it for a year. That means today's migration is genuinely one-directional. You're not patching old code. You're rebuilding your tracking logic inside Shopify's new system from scratch.
Why This Costs You Money, Not Just Data
The real financial risk isn't bad reporting. It's what automated ad platforms do with broken signals. Google Ads and Meta's bidding algorithms make real-time decisions based on the conversion data they receive. When that data stops arriving, or arrives without the customer information needed to match it to a specific user, campaigns don't just under-report, they actively make worse spending decisions, since the algorithm has less signal to optimize against.
There's a related wrinkle worth knowing about even if your scripts technically kept firing until today: Shopify stopped passing personally identifiable information, email, phone, name, address, to tracking scripts on legacy Thank You and Order Status pages back in August 2025. Your pixel may have still been firing on checkout completion, but without PII attached, platforms like Meta's Conversions API couldn't reliably match that event to a specific user. The purchase happened. The attribution quietly evaporated months before today's deadline even arrived.
What Replaces the Old System
Shopify's sanctioned replacement stack has three main pieces. Customer Events, built on the Web Pixels API, handles standard tracking events like checkout started, payment info submitted, and checkout completed, running inside a sandboxed environment rather than raw script injection. Native channel apps, Shopify's own Google and YouTube, Meta, and TikTok integrations, handle the major ad platform pixels directly. For visible on-page customizations rather than pure tracking, App Blocks and Checkout UI Extensions cover things like upsell widgets and custom order summaries, though deep editing of the core checkout steps themselves remains a Plus-only capability.
If your store runs an app built specifically on web pixels and server-side webhooks rather than legacy scripts, you may see nothing to migrate at all, and that's expected. Shopify's upgrade flow only lists scripts and code it actually detected on your legacy pages. An app with no code sitting on those pages won't appear on that list because there's nothing there to flag, not because something went wrong.
Check These Things Right Now
Go to Settings > Checkout in your Shopify admin and look for a yellow warning banner. If one's there, Shopify has identified deprecated scripts on your account that still need attention. Even without a banner, open the Additional Scripts box directly and check whether it's empty. If there's JavaScript sitting in there, that logic needs to already be rebuilt in Customer Events, since the box itself is view-only and cannot be edited from here forward.
Then go to Settings > Customer Events and confirm your Google Ads, Meta, and TikTok pixels are listed as active there, not just installed. An app showing as connected in your admin isn't the same as confirming its events are actually firing on the new checkout pages. If you use any affiliate tracking tool, verify directly with that provider whether their integration already moved to the Web Pixels API or whether it was still relying on the legacy script surface that just went away.
Before you make any changes to ad budgets or bidding strategy based on today's or tomorrow's performance numbers, rule out a tracking gap first. A sudden drop in reported conversions or a spike in cost-per-acquisition immediately following today's date is far more likely to be a broken pixel than an actual change in how your ads are performing, and pausing or cutting spend based on numbers corrupted by this migration is the costliest mistake you can make in the next 48 hours.
