TikTok Is Testing a Paid Membership Called Shop Plus to Rival Amazon Prime
TikTok is testing a Prime-style membership program for US shoppers, according to screenshots viewed by Business Insider. The program, called TikTok Shop Plus, sits inside TikTok Shop and bundles free shipping, product discounts, and coupons for a monthly fee. TikTok has not confirmed the program publicly or responded to requests for comment.
What TikTok Shop Plus Actually Offers
The screenshots show TikTok testing monthly price points of $6, $10, and $15, likely as separate pricing experiments rather than confirmed final tiers. In one example, a hair product normally priced around $57 dropped to $47 for Plus members, paired with free three-day shipping. In another, Plus members got a $5 discount on a beauty product priced close to $50.
The structure mirrors what Amazon, Walmart, and Target already run: pay a recurring fee, get faster shipping and member-only pricing, and keep more of your shopping inside one ecosystem.
Why TikTok Wants to Stop Shoppers From Leaving for Amazon
A former TikTok Shop staffer described the strategic problem this is meant to solve directly: “TikTok, for a long time, watched a lot of their bottom-funnel buyers go over to Amazon.” People would discover a product on TikTok, then “run over to Amazon to make a purchase,” the former staffer said.
That leakage is the exact gap Shop Plus is built to close. If a shopper already pays a monthly fee for free shipping and discounts on TikTok, the incentive to jump to Amazon for a familiar checkout experience weakens considerably.
This Fits a Larger Pattern, Not a One-Off Test
Shop Plus isn't happening in isolation. TikTok Shop launched Product Subscriptions to select US sellers on June 1, 2026, covering eight categories including Beauty, Food and Beverages, Health, Home Supplies, and Pet Supplies, letting sellers offer repeat-purchase discounts directly. Combined with the platform's existing Fulfilled by TikTok logistics network, the sequence reads as deliberate infrastructure-building rather than a scattered feature test.
Seller-level subscriptions create repeat buying habits at the product level. Shop Plus tests whether shoppers will pay TikTok itself for platform-wide benefits. Each piece supports the others.
TikTok's Growth Numbers Explain the Urgency
TikTok's US ecommerce business is growing fast enough to justify this level of investment. TikTok Shop drove $4.9 billion in US sales in the first quarter of 2026 alone, roughly double the same quarter a year earlier, and topped $20 billion in US GMV across the first half of the year. EMARKETER forecasts TikTok's full US ecommerce business could cross $23 billion in sales for 2026.
That's still small next to Amazon, which EMARKETER expects to generate more than $500 billion in US sales the same year. But the growth rate, not the current scale, is what's driving TikTok's long-term ambition. ByteDance is chasing something closer to what its Chinese sister app Douyin already generates domestically: hundreds of billions of dollars in annual sales, built substantially on the same content-to-purchase model TikTok Shop is now trying to replicate in the US.
Why TikTok Keeps Building Amazon's Playbook
The overlap between TikTok Shop's features and Amazon's own offerings isn't accidental. TikTok hired dozens of Amazon staffers when it prepared to launch Shop in the US in 2023. Current and former employees have described early team meetings as feeling like Amazon alumni reunions, down to adopting Amazon's own internal practices, like narrative memos and single-owner project accountability.
Kierra Butcher, a TikTok agency partner who works directly with Shop creators, put the platform's current standing bluntly: “There are brands now that are TikTok-Shop first and do their new launches exclusively on TikTok. TikTok has proven itself as a marketplace, and the opportunities have continued to grow with time.”
What This Means If You Sell on TikTok Shop
If you sell products in categories where content-driven discovery converts well, beauty, apparel, accessories, consumables, Shop Plus is worth watching closely rather than treating as background noise. A working loyalty program changes the math on repeat purchase rates and average order value for sellers already active on the platform, since members with a paid subscription tend to shop more frequently to justify the fee.
The practical move right now is treating TikTok Shop as a genuine diversification channel with its own margin structure and customer behavior patterns, not as a discovery funnel that dumps traffic onto Amazon. If your current strategy still assumes TikTok is primarily where customers find your product before buying it somewhere else, that assumption is exactly what TikTok is building Shop Plus to break.
