Amazon Brings Grade and Resell to Canada, Giving FBA Sellers a New Way to Recover Returns
Amazon has officially rolled out Grade and Resell in its Canada store, closing a gap that had left Canadian sellers without a program many US sellers have used for over a year to squeeze value out of customer returns. The rollout was confirmed this week in an email sent directly to sellers by the Fulfillment by Amazon team.
What the Program Does
Grade and Resell lets Amazon automatically evaluate FBA returns that are otherwise unfulfillable and relist them as Used, rather than routing them to disposal or liquidation or forcing sellers to arrange removal orders themselves. Eligible items are inspected and sorted into one of four used conditions — Like New, Very Good, Good, or Acceptable — with Amazon providing shoppers a description of any imperfections, packaging issues, or functionality notes before the item goes back up for sale.
Sellers keep control over pricing, and Amazon says there are no program fees to opt an ASIN in, though a per-unit grading and processing fee still applies when an item is actually relisted, based on its size and weight. Enrollment status and performance can be tracked alongside the rest of a seller's returns activity in Seller Central.
Why Canada Is Catching Up Now
Until this week, Canadian sellers were explicitly locked out. Amazon's own seller forum confirmed as recently as late October that the program was not yet available north of the border, directing sellers to review the US version instead. That answer is now out of date.
The Canada launch follows a string of updates Amazon has made to the US version of the program over the past several months, including an expansion into new product categories, automatic removal of out-of-stock SKUs from the enrollment view, and a shift from an opt-out model to an opt-in “ASIN inclusion” approach that lets sellers hand-pick up to 2,000 specific ASINs rather than enrolling their whole catalog by default.
How to Turn It On
Amazon's instructions for enabling the program in Canada are straightforward:
- Go to Fulfillment by Amazon settings in Seller Central
- Select Automated unfulfillable settings
- Find Grade and Resell under recovery options and choose which ASINs to enroll
What It Means for Sellers
For sellers who've been eating the cost of removal orders or third-party liquidators on unsellable Canadian returns, this is a direct new recovery channel — and one they've been asking about for a while, based on the forum activity. The bigger question is the same one US sellers have wrestled with since the program launched there: Grade and Resell items sell on the same listing as new stock, so any reviews or return-rate issues from used units feed into the same product rating. Sellers weighing whether to enroll will want to factor that risk against the alternative of simply eating a disposal or removal fee with nothing to show for it.
Amazon hasn't said whether Canada will get the same category expansions and opt-in tooling the US program picked up earlier this year, or whether that will follow on its own timeline.
