TikTok’s New Checkout Lets Brands Sell Without TikTok Shop

TikTok announced Buy Direct and Shopping Assistant on October 5, giving eligible brands two new ways to turn an ad into a purchase. The important detail is not the AI framing. Buy Direct lets a shopper complete checkout inside TikTok while the brand remains the Merchant of Record.

That makes it structurally different from opening a TikTok Shop. A brand can keep its existing commerce operation while TikTok controls more of the path between discovery and payment.

Testing is limited, and TikTok has not published fees, country availability, or a rollout date.

How Buy Direct Differs From TikTok Shop

TikTok's product announcement says Buy Direct can use a shopper's stored payment and delivery details for native in-app checkout, with order tracking inside TikTok. The merchant stays Merchant of Record.

That role carries real weight. The merchant generally remains responsible for the sale, product claims, fulfillment, taxes, customer service, refunds, and chargebacks, subject to final program terms. TikTok shortens checkout without taking on the business consequences.

TikTok says the feature uses the Universal Commerce Protocol and names Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza, and Stripe as early partners. Access runs through eligibility, with advertisers directed to their TikTok sales representative. That is not self-service availability.

The standard route through TikTok Shop requires operating inside TikTok's marketplace structure, fees, and fulfillment rules. Buy Direct appears to preserve more of your existing stack, though the announcement does not define where every responsibility sits.

What Shopping Assistant Does Differently

Shopping Assistant is a separate product. When a user opens an advertiser's product page in TikTok's in-app browser, the assistant answers questions about sizing, availability, shipping, and other details. Checkout still happens on the merchant's site inside that browser.

Those answers come from information the merchant supplies. That makes catalog quality an operational control rather than a copywriting task. If your product feed says two-day shipping while the warehouse needs five, an automated answer creates a support problem before the order exists.

Audit every field that affects a buying decision: variants, dimensions, materials, compatibility, inventory status, delivery promises, return terms. Compare the assistant's answers against your live product page and your support team's approved responses.

Test the exceptions too. A general return policy may not cover final-sale items, customized products, or hazardous materials.

How to Test Buy Direct Without Losing Attribution

TikTok has published no merchant results for Buy Direct. Even if checkout reduces abandonment, you still need to know whether the orders are incremental and profitable.

Start with stable products: reliable inventory, simple shipping, enough contribution to absorb uncertain acquisition costs. Keep a control group running through your normal website checkout.

For each path, reconcile the ad click, order ID, payment, tax, discount, fulfillment record, refund, and chargeback. Confirm which system becomes the source of truth when a customer changes an address or cancels. Test whether your warehouse, help desk, and accounting integrations receive the same data they get from a normal store order.

Attribution needs particular discipline. TikTok may report a conversion your ecommerce platform assigns differently. Do not add both claims together. Compare total orders, new customers, contribution, and refunds across the whole business during the test window.

The Control Questions to Ask Before Enrolling

A faster checkout helps mobile shoppers, and TikTok gains more control over the buying experience. Before enrolling, establish who owns the customer service record, what contact data you receive, how payment disputes work, which refund actions sync back to TikTok, and whether you can opt out by product.

Ask how Buy Direct interacts with your existing affiliate arrangements and any TikTok Shop offers. TikTok Shop affiliate commissions already make a sale look more attractive than it is until platform-funded and seller-funded incentives get separated.

Document your current checkout economics and integration path now. If access appears, test one cohort with a fixed loss limit and verify the entire order lifecycle before scaling.

The disclosures worth waiting for are eligibility, geography, fees, data access, refund mechanics, and merchant-level evidence that native checkout produces incremental contribution.
